For this project one of our earliest clients from when Lamplight Studio started reached out to us

again for another project. Not a kitchen this time but rather a bespoke piece of furniture for their

first hill condo.

With a twin xl shikibuton as our core dimensional constraint we carefully researched to find the right proportional balance to the piece.

This futon was designed to function in multiple roles: As a lounging sofa in the living room, a bed for guests, as well as become an artistic focal point in their home.

For the construction of this piece we wanted to find a balance between a traditional raised Japanese futon and something rooted in the Pacific Northwest, in doing this we selected tight grain douglas fir which grows in abundance in the northwest. Additionally, to help preserve the purity of the design we relied on traditional wood working techniques through the use of mortise and tenons to remove the need for fasteners.

The traditional setup featured in the photos incorporates a tatami mat, a shikibuton, and a rolled kakefuton along the back rest for added ergonomic support. The multiple soft layers help ground the futon in the room and compliment the warm tones of the wood.
